The Asv Pioneer has arrived at Giglio Island and is now positioned near the wreck of the Costa Concordia. Owned by Scottish group Ferguson Zoom and chartered for six months by the Titan Micoperi Consortium tasked with removing the Concordia, the platform will provide support for work to create a false sea bottom using special grout bags.
The 60 double cabins in the platform will provide accommodation for the team of divers who will work day and night to complete work on schedule. The platform’s deck area will also be used for some of the equipment needed to produce the cement mortar and assemble the removable bags that will be positioned in the dip in the sea bottom at the centre of the wreck. The Pioneer, built in 2007 by Nantong Tongcheng Ship Manufacturing and purchased by Ferguson in 2009, was converted in Glasgow by the new owner and is now able to accommodate a total of 220 people, while the 1,100 sq m deck can be used for equipment weighing up to 15 tons per square meter.
